HOUSING

Temporary

The Madison Friends of International Students offers up to 3 days of housing at no cost with families in the area of Madison. You can search for further information in “temporary housing” section of http://www.intstudents.wisc.edu/mfis/index.htm

For information on hotels, hostels or dorms on campus, visit: http://housing.civc.wisc.edu/overnight.asp

Permanent

On Campus

UW-Madison has dorms and apartments for rent. Dorms are available for either undergraduate or graduate students, while apartments are available only for graduate students (single or with family), professors and university employees. Further information is at http://www.housing.wisc.edu

Off Campus

To rent an apartment or a house outside the campus area, the following resources are available:

The university provides a list of apartments, houses, efficiencies, rooms and co-ops for students and the university community submitted by tenants, sublessors, owners and managers, as well as information on regulations you must know before renting. See http://housing.civc.wisc.edu

Start Renting Magazine
You can find this magazine containing information on places for rent in many places (some restaurants and close to bus stops). It is free. There is also a web page, http://www.startrenting.com

General Information

When looking for an apartment, the most important points to consider are:
1) Ask what utilities are included in the rent (water, electricity, gas, etc) and about the minimum length of the lease.
2) It is better to have heating included in the rent because heat expenses can run very high during the winter. Take into account that apartments located in front of a lake or exposed to the wind require more energy to heat.
3) Electricity is generally not included in the rent. If you must contact MGE to arrange for service, call (608) 252 7222, 1-800-245-1125, or go to http://www.mge.com. Your landlord must provide you electricity while your application for service is processed.
4) Some buildings or condominiums do not have their own laundry facilities. It is recommended you rent a place that either provides laundry facilities or is located close to a laundromat. Washing and drying machines usually work with 25 cents coins. Take into account that it is not easy to take your clothes to a laundromat during the winter.
5) By law, the security deposit cannot exceed the amount of one month of rent.
6) In some places, pets are not allowed, and in some others, you are required to pay a monthly fee or a special deposit if you have a pet.
7) It is important that you take note of the general condition of the apartment you rent when you first arrive. Landlords will ordinarily provide a form for renters to fill out to record preexisting damage to the apartment (holes in the wall, broken cabinets, carpet stains, etc). If the landlord does not provide a form for this purpose, make your own record of the condition of the apartment and give a copy to your landlord. Otherwise, you could be held responsible for preexisting damage when you leave.
8) It is a good idea to rent a place located near a bus stop. Go to www.ci.madison.wi.us/metro/metro.html to check for maps and schedules.
9) If you have a car, ask if there is an additional cost for the parking space. Parking spaces on campus are expensive and scarce.
10) Make sure to have a map when going to see apartments. That way, you will always know where are you located in relation to the university and other parts of the city.
11) Ask if there are convenience stores, banks, supermarkets, laundromats, bus stops, etc. near the apartment.
12) The Tenant Resource Center offers advice on how to resolve any problems you might have with your landlord or apartmentmates. http://trc.studentorg.wisc.edu
13) Take your time when visiting apartments. Do not assume things, and always ask to clarify all of your questions. Most of all, do not feel intimidated by the landlord.

Swap
The university has a store where they sell everything from chairs to computers or beds. http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/swap/swap.html

Another option for used furniture is to check the streets, especially during the month of August when many people are moving. People discard things in very good condition and anyone can take them for free.

Garage sales are a good alternative between the months of April and September. Be on the look out. Signs advertising garage sales are often only posted for a short time in the neighborhoods where they take place.

WEATHER AND ADEQUATE CLOTHING

How to convert from Fahrenheit to Centigrade
www.albireo.ch/temperatureconverter/

The weather in Madison changes frequently and sometimes reaches extremely cold temperatures. During the summer, temperatures of 32-38 °C are common, whereas in winter, the temperature can reach -40°C. Changes in temperature occur very fast, so it is a good idea to check the weather forecast before you leave home. Here are a few relevant links:
www.weather.com
www.theweathernetwork.com

In the winter season, you really need a good coat, gloves, a hat, scarf and something to cover your ears. It is also recommended to wear long underwear to protect you from cold winds. In addition, a good pair of boots is very helpful, especially when the ground becomes slippery with ice.

Although a good coat might be expensive, in Wisconsin, it is worth the expense. A good coat is:

Warm
Waterproof
Adjusts well to your waist and neck.

If it is possible, a good way to save money is to buy winter clothes at the end of a winter season when many stores have sales to clear out older winter fashions for the coming spring.
